Christmas Day would once have been the first of twelve days of feasting and celebration and, by order of the church, no work. There would still have been religious observances, some more significant than others and some we still have in modern liturgical calendars.
So here following are some of the high days and holy days that would have been celebrated in the past. There are others, and some of the dates vary between western and eastern Christian traditions, and have changed over the years.
